Indian Classical Music is a profound art form with roots dating back over 6,000 years. It is characterized by two main elements:

  1. Raga: A melodic framework that forms the structural basis of the music.
  2. Tala: The rhythmic cycle that provides the foundational beat.

These elements combine to create music that is deeply connected to nature, often reflecting specific seasons or times of day.

Key Features of Indian Classical Music

  • Improvisation: Unlike Western classical music, Indian classical music places a strong emphasis on improvisation within the framework of raga and tala
  • Microtones: The use of subtle variations in pitch, known as shruti, adds depth and complexity to the music.
  • Unique Instruments: Sitar, tabla, sarod, and tanpura are some of the distinctive instruments used in this tradition.
  • Vocal Techniques: Indian classical singers employ a clear, full voice without vibrato or falsetto, creating a distinctive timbre.
